In the meantime, here's a few more Boston skyline pictures. The nighttime one is from atop the Prudential building and the daytime one is from the Bunker Hill monument.
Also, lest you think that I'm done finding the goofy things just because I've finished my cross country trip, here's Boston's narrowest house (it's only 10 feet wide in the back).
The story goes that two bothers had a plot of land and that one of them went away to sea. At that time, going away to sea basically meant that you weren't coming back, so the brother that remained decided to build a large house, leaving only a sliver of land in case his brother returned. Well, the seafaring brother did return; irritated at the selfishness of his brother, he decided to build on that small bit of land, creating a house just tall enough to block his brother's view of the water. Ah, brotherly love.
I also got a book about all the odd things to see in Massachusetts, so hopefully I'll have more crazy things to post as I see them.
Last week, I also got up to the Salem Witch Museum, which I thought was super cool. The museum had a really good presentation on what happened. The best line of it all: "Contrary to what most people believe, no one was burned at the stake in Salem. They were generally hung... which is somehow better." Also funny is that the Salem you visit today isn't really the Salem where most of this stuff actually happened. There were two places: Salem Village and Salem Town. Only one retained the name and so like good capitalists, they are the ones taking advantage of it.
Oh, and by the way, it was pointed out that I needed to correct my last post when I said that I needed to do the Cambridge-side of the Freedom Trail. Silly me, there is no Cambridge-side; it's the Charlestown-side (the only red line in Cambridge is the subway which, while fun to ride, isn't so interesting historically speaking.
I also turned 34 last week (Happy birthday to me!) I went out for dinner and drinks with some of the other interns I'll be working with. They are a good group and I think we'll have lots of fun over the next year.
And one last story I thought was funny - I finally went to Fenway Park. But not for a baseball game. Not surprisingly, it took food to get me down there. Today was a food festival just outside the stadium :) (I'm sure some day I'll see a game there, but it isn't really at the top of my list right now... unless someone has some free tickets they want to give me!)
